Scaling and root planing are thorough cleanings without surgery for periodontal (gum) disease. During these deep cleanings, the gums are numbed, and specialized tools are used to clean deep pockets below the gumline where standard cleaning can't reach.
Scaling removes plaque and tartar from the tooth's surface, while root planing smooths the tooth's roots to help the gums reattach and stay healthy.
During the scaling process, we will use special instruments to remove the plaque and tartar from the root and surface of the crown.
During the root planing process, we will remove the dentin and cementum and then use special tools to smooth the root of your tooth. Doing so will help reduce the possibility of bacteria from developing.

Dr. Ryan Platt was absolutely amazing! My daughter was seen by him instead of her regular dentist because he was on vacation, and he got her in right away and took care of her better than I could have imagined!
